Gear ratio question

I recently bought a 94 z28 with a M6 transmission. It still has the stock 342 gears and I am thinking about replacing them with 410s my question is are 410s too much? I dd this car about 45 min one way to work every day. My last car was a 93z28 with a 700r4 and some one installed 456s and the car was useless for cruising.

Yes, 4.56's would be a mistake for an A4 road car, IMO.
However, 4.10's are ideal for an M6 in an F-body.
4.56's are good with M6's too, and some guys with T-56's in the heavier B-bodies claim the 4.56 rear is perfect, as long as they have the .5 OD version of the T56.

I had 3.73s in my old rear end just got my new rear end installed a few months ago and it came with 4.10s i love it perfect gear for a 6spd car at 70mph it tacks around 2000-2100. They should come factory with 4.10s

Yeah in my a4 it was equivalent to driving a chainsaw. I just do not want to jeopardize the drivability of the car because I do drive it quite frequently.... first gear has to be really short with 410s. How about spining the tires ? It must be fairly easy to spin them

I need new tires so kinda hard to say but with the old drag radials that r on the car ya they break loose to easy even at a 20 roll they break loose like its in ice

Launching with steep gears is a lot easier than with milder gears. The steeper gears help you walk that fine line between bogging and spinning. You have much better control with throttle modulation.

Bowtie is absolutely right. 4.10s are PERFECT for a M6, 6th gear is usable for me from 50 mph on up, with a stock cam down to 45 mph. Sure it's more shifting up to cruising speed but you can skip gears. If you end up racing it the 4.10s will help your 60' and you'll get a long pull in 4th through the lights instead of 3rd with 3.42s.

My old camaro was a wimpy 165 hp 245 tq 305 M5 We installed a holley 650 cfm carb, (didn't do much ) we installed a set of off brand Longtubes (didn't do much ) we even bought a holly performer intake (didn't do much ) and finally my dad said let's swap the rear end out. A set of 4.10's got that baby moving, for a 305 she was stout. I'm sure you will love a set of 4.10's behind that thing.

Thanks guys for all the input. I am just a little gun shy because i do drive this car alot and i just dont want jeopardize the drivabilty of it. I think i am going to go with the 410s

Do you know anyone with 4.10s you could get a ride with? I DD a 5 spd Honda Fit and a old Civic before that and believe it or not I find normal driving/shifting them to be very similar to my T/A with 4.10s. Except of course when I put the wood to the LT1. I initially had misgivings about 4.10s when I drove with them in a spare 10 bolt I built up but I ended up liking them so much that I got them in my S60. I almost went with 4.30s.

I dont know any one with that gear ratio. I was just worried about the rpm in 6th gear i guess because i didnt want the rpms to high. What is a good make gear to use ? I always used moser stuff but am open to any brand
